Covid 19 Update

Many of our businesses including cafes, restaurants, accommodation providers and attractions are now open and are operating with enhanced safety measures in place. Our advice is to check individual websites for full details and book in advance wherever possible.

All Allerdale Borough Council owned public toilets and car parks are also now open. Workington (Wednesday), Wigton (Friday), Silloth (Thursday) and Keswick (Thursdays and Saturdays) outdoor markets are once again operational, although are operating at a slightly reduced capacity with enhanced safety measures.

A message to our communities and visitors:

We know how important getting out and about is to people’s health and wellbeing, however we ask everyone from areas where new restrictions are in place to consider whether their travel is necessary at the moment. We expect everyone who visits or lives in Allerdale to continue to observe social distancing, whether they have travelled from a ‘lockdown’ area or otherwise. This virus has not gone away, but if we all continue to social distance, wash our hands and wear face coverings, everyone can play a part in helping protect our local communities.

The current government advice is that people from Tier 3 (very high risk) areas do not travel out of their area or stay away from home overnight. Check the latest Government guidance and up to date local Covid alert levels.

If you do visit, please plan ahead to avoid the busy areas using, take all your litter away with you, stick to social distancing and show the respect and love to Allerdale that it deserves.

The Lake District… and so much more

Welcome to Allerdale. If you’re not familiar with the name, we’re the north-west bit of the Lake District – and we think you’ll find we’re a little bit special. Yes, we have lakes and iconic mountains, and all the amazing views the words ‘The Lake District’ conjure up, but visit Allerdale and you’ll find even more than that.

Here, you’ll discover two UNESCO World Heritage sites – the world-famous Lake District National Park and the amazingly historic Hadrian’s Wall. Beyond both of those, there is the chance to discover the hidden charms of the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with beaches, dunes and wetlands galore.

Then there are the Lake District hotels – from the small and quirky guest houses to the most luxurious of country houses. Or perhaps you’re looking for a Lake District cottage? Allerdale has some lovely places to stay, whether you want something small and cosy or a huge self-catering hideaway with family and friends.

And then there are the Lake District restaurants, cafes and pubs with flavours to suit all tastes, whether that’s fine dining or the simplest home-cooked fare. You should seek out our award-winning food producers too. They’re making everything from coffee, gin and beer, to bread, cheese and even muesli.

There are so many things to do in the Lake District and this corner of Cumbria called Allerdale. You could swing through the mountains and the trees, cycle and walk on the fells and the coast, or paddle, sail or row on our lakes and rivers.

You could discover history in our unique museums, find some culture in our theatres, admire some outstanding architecture or enjoy some retail therapy in lovely independent shops – or you could just sit and admire one of those outstanding views.

Whatever you decide, your next adventure begins here – in Allerdale.
