Eating and drinking

Lake District Restaurants, Pubs & Cafes

Local, seasonal produce and ingredients, passionate chefs and artisan producers – the food and drink experience in Allerdale is one to tempt every palate.

Here you can discover the proper Lake District pubs, the fine dining restaurants, the most traditional of tea shops and cafes, and the shops selling the best local ingredients.

Try Keswick and Cockermouth for their internationally-inspired restaurants, or head to Maryport or Silloth for fish and chips by the sea. Inland in Wigton and Aspatria are some real hidden gems, while down in Workington national names sit alongside independent eateries.

Everywhere you go, you’ll find real pub grub, home cooked, fresh and local. Our chefs’ ingredients are inspired by our landscapes – the fish, meat, fruit and vegetables which make this area such a special place.

Allerdale is blessed with some award-winning independent food and drink specialists serving the freshest flavours around. There are so many places to buy them too, at our food festivals, in our markets, on the high street in greengrocers, butchers, bakeries, fishmongers and delis.

Food and drink are such a special part of the Allerdale experience. Enjoy!

Taste Cumbria

Lovely Cockermouth becomes a foodie paradise twice a year. Main Street hosts a giant producers market, while elsewhere in town there are pop-up restaurants, demos and talks by top chefs. The Taste Cumbria food festival takes place in the last weekend of September, with Christmas markets at the start of December.

These are pubs and inns where you are guaranteed a well-kept pint, with many places serving great food too. Whether you’re after a town centre location, or one of the most beautiful countryside idylls, you’ll find good Cumbrian crack here as well.

Cafe culture

Cafe culture is definitely well established in Allerdale. We have some amazing and individual coffee shops that are well worth seeking out. Great coffee is the starting point with the icing on the cake being the homemade food that sits alongside it. You can even find coffee roasters here, making the brews served in some of the country’s best restaurants.
