A pretty, unspoilt seaside town
Silloth is a classic, unpsoilt English seaside town on the solway coast. It has a superb, extensive town green right in its centre, with kids water play area and independent shops to browse. Its long promenade provides a lovely walk taking in the the majestic Solway Firth and views across the water to Scotland.
Special landscape
The town borders the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The AONB’s Discovery Centre in the town is a great introduction to the seabirds, wild flowers, special landscapes and unique built heritage you can discover in the area. A Silloth sunset is to be savoured especially in Virtual Reality.
Quiet cycling routes
Silloth is a fine base for cycling due to the flatness of the landscape and the large number of quiet roads. Hadrian’s Cycleway, National Route 72 also passes through the town and the Discovery Centre has a free pack of cycle routes with maps.
Quality accommodation
In town and close by, you will find a range of good quality accommodation of all types from the landmark Golf Hotel, to the highly rated Stanwix Holiday Park. The Green View Guest House overlooks the idyllic Solway Coast and is home to Stella’s Bistro, which serves great home-cooked meals.
Water splash
After extensive refurbishment work, the Green now boasts a modern Water Splash play area, a woodland adventure play area, a Putting Green and a BMX track.
Time for a picnic
Beautiful oak picnic tables and benches are to be found in various locations, with accessible footpaths. Along Criffel Street, some Victorian style lighting was installed, in-keeping with the heritage of the town.
Championship golf
The championship golf course at Silloth on Solway Golf Club is a fine challenge for golfers of all ages. It regularly appears in in peoples lists of top links courses in the country. Don’t miss Soldiers in Silloth, with it’s fine displays of over 6,000 toy soldiers.
Festivals and events
Silloth also has an extensive festival and events programme, ranging from its famous beer and music festival to its vintage rally.
Green Flag award
Silloth Green in has been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the very best in the world. This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.
Edwardian splendour
The Edwardian ladies’ toilets built in 1910 and the spectacular Victorian pagoda overlooking the sea were also sympathetically refurbished.
Fairy trail
A new addition to Silloth Green this year is the fairy trail through the pines for kids to explore and there are plans for a new 0-5yrs Children’s play area which is to be installed in the coming weeks.
RAF memorial
A new addition to Silloth Green is a replica Hudson Bomber built by skilled apprentices from Gen2 at Workington which is sited above a flowerbed, planted out in the shape of an RAF roundel, to celebrate the 100th birthday of the RAF.
