Keswick, on the shores of Derwent Water is an outdoor paradise surrounded by magnificent hills. Enthusiasts are catered for by one of the best ranges of outdoor shops in the country. Keswick is the Lake District’s premier town and a perfect base to discover the local fells and lakes. There is something for everyone, be it a gentle amble along the shores of Derwent Water to Friar’s Cragg, a leisurely walk up Latrigg, or a full day trek up and along one of the nearby ridges.

You can try paragliding, cycling, canyoning, canoeing or swimming. Honister’s Via Ferrata is a must for high adrenaline fun and Whinaltter Forest Park has fantastic mountain bike and walking trails while it’s also home to the famous Go Ape!

Local Attractions

No visit is complete without a trip down the Borrowdale Valley and the Bowder Stone which has captivated visitors for years. And don’t forget about nearby Bassenthwaite Lake with its Osprey visitors in the summer, as well as popular Ashness Bridge and Surprise view.

Culture

Away from the hills, there is much culture and heritage to catch your attention. The Theatre by the Lake, hailed by The Independent as “the most beautifully located and friendly theatre in Britain”, present up to nine productions of classic, modern and new plays throughout the year. Keswick’s very own museum provides an enjoyable experience for young and old to discover the area’s history – look out for the changing exhibitions calendar, including, Rawnsley, celebrating the work of the conservationist and one of the founders of the national Trust, until August 2020.

Keswick for Kids

Kids are well catered for in Keswick – both outdoors and in. If they still have the energy take them to the adventure playground at Fitz Park. Or to the town’s spa which includes flumes and a wave machine. They will be amused, entertained and puzzled at Puzzling Place. It’s pencil heaven at the Derwent Pencil Museum. Discover their secret world war two pencils with hidden maps; one of the largest colour pencils in the world measuring almost eight metres and Queen’s diamond Jubilee pencil. Or have a go on the crazy golf and remote control boats in Hope Park. 

Derwentwater

A trip on a motor launch on serene Derwent Water surrounded by the striking Borrowdale fells on three sides gives you a memorable introduction to Keswick. You can hop on and off the launch to explore Borrowdale or the areas once enjoyed by Beatrix Potter around Lingholm or Brandelhow on foot. Wainwright thought the area around King’s How was the most beautiful square mile in England!

Keswick Market

Keswick’s award-winning market is held on Thursday and Saturday offering local food and gifts. The attractive town centre offers a wide range of fantastic eateries, coffee shops and independent retailers.
