Lake District Events & Festivals
Allerdale’s festival and events calendar mirrors the vibrant cultural life of our warm-hearted area. Whinlatter Forest Park is a centre for events and activities for all ages including the challenging Whinlatter 10k. Cockermouth is taken over by the area’s biggest food festival, Taste Cumbria Cockermouth for a weekend in September and December. Keswick naturally hosts the major outdoor festival, Keswick Mountain Festival and Words by the Water, while Silloth hosts a fabulous annual Music and Beer Festival on the Green in town.
Keswick Live Advent Calendar 2019
A festive-themed window is illuminated in a different Keswick business from the 1 to the 24 December. Alongside this each day will be a different festive event, from story-telling to fancy dress canoe racing! The illuminated windows stay lit until early January, forming a magical and festive window trail around town which visitors and residents can follow and enjoy.
Taste Cumbria Christmas 2019
A host of artisan producers, a covered live music stage, kids activities and Cockermouth’s great independent shops – a great day out and the perfect opportunity for some Christmas shopping. Join us in Cockermouth town centre on the 7 and 8 December for the Taste Cumbria Christmas Festival. Eat, drink and be merry!
Keswick Victorian Fayre
Keswick Victorian Fayre takes place every December and it’s a great opportunity to do some Christmas shopping and supporting a wide range of charities and good causes. Fun for all the family.
Workington Christmas Festival
Taking place every December, Workington Christmas Festival is an event jam packed with entertainment including live music, walkabout entertainers, face painting, fun fair, and storytelling. A local market stretches out onto the main street with a fabulous mix of independent local businesses selling tempting treats and beautiful hand-made gifts.
Silloth Christmas Lights Switch-on Day
Organised by Silloth Rotary, this festive event will keep the whole family entertained with a Santa’s grotto, entertainment and beat the buzzer competition. Make your lantern during the afternoon and then parade to Silloth Green for the lights switch-on at 6pm.
Community Coppicing Day at Great Wood. Sunday 8 December 2019. 10am to 2pm.
Need bean poles for your veg plot, or a rustic walking stick? Bring your own hand tools to learn the traditional skill of coppicing, harvest material and improve Great Wood’s wildlife habitats. This is an opportunity actively work in the woodland and take home produce from your endeavours. National Trust Great Wood car park, Borrowdale, CA12 5UP. Please bring gloves and protective clothing suitable for the weather conditions. Hand saws suitable for cutting small round hazel branches and stems. No powered tools, loppers available on site. A free event, normal car parking charges apply in Great Wood, National Trust Members park for free.
A Gospel Christmas Concert
St. Michael’s Church in Workington is the venue for a free Gospel Christmas Concert on Saturday 21 December. Featuring Eaglesfield Paddle CE Primary Academy Children’s Choir. Doors open at 4pm.
Keswick Mountain Festival
Keswick Mountain Festival is your ultimate outdoors weekend. Challenge yourself with a world class sporting event, get inspiration from top speakers, then finish it all off with two evenings of live music. Every year in May.
Solfest is a family friendly music festival spanning many musical genres and eras. There’s plenty to enjoy in addition to the music from walkabout performers, the green area workshop and the healing garden.
Silloth Music and Beer festival
Around 60 real ales, many from Allerdale are featured with 22 draft ciders. For the non-real ale drinkers, there is lager, perry ciders, wine, soft drinks and water! Add in a fine selection of tribute bands, it has all the right ingredients for a great weekend. Every early September.
Words by the Water
The festival promotes both the written and the spoken word, bringing people together in the beautiful surroundings by the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick. Meet top authors and writers every March to listen, talk, debate, learn. and have your favourite authors sign copies of their books for you.
Aspatria Music Festival
Aspatria Music Festival, formally known as “Spyatstock” was originally setup in 2013 by local musician Damon McRea (of Brightside et al fame) and Matthew Turnbull in aid of CDH UK. It’s an annual, not for profit festival benefiting charities. Join 1500 music fans every July.
Silloth Vintage Rally
Steam engines, classic cars, vintage tractors, classic motorcycles – Silloth Vintage Rally has it all and more. On the Green in the centre of town every June, the rally has plenty of food, drink and music to keep you mightily entertained.
Tour of Britain
The OVO Energy Tour of Britain returned to Allerdale in September for not one, but two, days. Stage 5 on September 6 saw the tour start in Cockermouth for a team time trial to Whinlatter Forest Park.
The following day, the tour started in Barrow, before arriving into Allerdale at Dunmail Raise. Heading through Keswick and over Whinlatter Pass. The riders then headed to Loweswater, Workington via Fangs Brow, Seaton, Broughton, Cockermouth, Castle Inn, then back to Keswick before finishing at Whinlatter again.
